Apple, the technology giant has been rumoured to launch three new iPad models this year. Now, if a note issued by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is anything to go by, there will not a ‘Mini’ iPad model in the lineup.
The note, obtained by Apple Insider website, proposes that the upcoming three iPad models will include an updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro, a 10 or 10.5-inch iPad with narrow bezels, and a low-priced 9.7-inch iPad. All three iPads are expected to launch in Q2 this year, probably between April and June.
The note included that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 10/10.5-inch iPad Pro models will run on an upgraded version of the Apple A10 processor, presently powering Apple’s iPhone 7 models. The upgraded processors are likely to be named ‘A10X’. It was also revealed that the chip might be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
The smaller 9.7-inch iPad model will reportedly run on an A9 chip which came along with the Cupertino giant’s iPhone 6s series of smartphones. According to the note, this variant will be manufactured by Samsung.
Kuo said that the 9.7-inch model may add to 50-60% of total iPad shipments. Interestingly, he also predicted that iPad shipments may drop again.
As per the report published last month, the rumoured iPad Pro 2 will be launched in March this year. Rumours further added that the iPad Pro 2 may also come in the variants mentioned above – according to screen size.
Apple was supposed to start production of 10.5-inch iPad last month according to the report. This variant is expected to have the same footprint as the 9.7-inch iPad Pro. This essentially implies that the device will cut down on screen bezels to a large extent.
