Apple Watch Series 3 may come with a new display material. The Cupertino-based tech firm may start using G/F (glass-film) touch solution for the upcoming smartwatch, reports Digitimes. For those unaware, Apple used G/G (2 pieces of glass) touch panels for Apple Watch and later shifted to TOL (touch on lens) for the second-generation model.

According to the report, the supplier of the G/F (glass-film) touch solution will be Taiwan-based General Interface Solution or Hong Kong-based Biel Crystal Manufactory. The shipments of these new type of Apple Watch screens is said to begin in the second half of 2017.

The report adds that TPK Holdings, which made G/G (2 pieces of glass) touch panels for the 1st generation Apple Watch, is not able to increase the yield rates for TOL (touch on lens) for the second-generation model. It has been added that TPK Holdings will focus on 3D sensor-based touch panels for smartphones and will cease the production of touch panels for Apple Watch in order to return to profitability.

On a related note, Apple recently rolled out WatchOS 3.2 beta 3 to developers for testing purposes. The watchOS 3.2 includes ‘Theatre Mode’. The mode aims to make the wearable less distracting while watching movies in theatres. It is said to mute the sound of the Apple Watch. It also turns off the ‘Wake-Up’ feature which lights up the screen when the users raise their wrists to activate the device’s screen. However, they will still receive notifications
with haptic feedback.
