BSNL plans expansion with investments worth 2,500 crore


BSNL is planning to pump in some 2,500 crore during the second half of the financial year .This investment is expected to made in various projects which include; expansion of wifi hotspots, strengthening the core network and installation of mobile towers.

The (BSNL) Chairman and Managing Director, Anupam Shrivastava also gave details on BSNL’s investments for the full fiscal .These are divided in two parts; BSNL’s own projects which sees investment of Rs 4000 crore,Rs 3000 crore for government funded projects.

As far as projects funded by BSNL as considered , RS 1500 crore has already been pumped in during the first half of the fiscal year, and about 2,500 crore is planned to be invested in time period of October and March. This encompasses setting of wifi Hotspots, GSM expansion and strengthening of the core network. These projects will be done by laying optical fibers lines and investment in equipment related to the network.

Under the GSM extension project, BSNL will introduce 20,000 BTS this year to enhance its service quality, and a large portion of these eventual introduced between October and March.

The telecom PSU, has decided on a blend of “capex and opex model” for wifi expansion. As of now, 2700 wifi hotspots in the nation and BSNL aims to take this number to 40,000 wifi hotspots by March 2018 with help of this model. They also plan to connect these hotspots to their mobile network and leverage it for its mobile users.

The government funded projects on the other hand that are being executed by BSNL include Installation of mobile towers in Left-Wing Extremist states, BharatNet and Defense’s network for spectrum project.
