Booklet 3G : Nokia finally back with a bang to PC business

Nokia, the world's leading mobile phone maker, has announced its first x86 portable computer system, “Booklet 3G”, a mini-laptop that has been designed on Intel's popular Atom platform for netbook systems. It is important to note that the company embraces both Intel and Windows 7, instead of its own software or ARM platform, Linux territory, which is used in its Internet tablets.

With the introduction of Nokia Booklet 3G, Nokia has made a return to its PC business after 15 long years when it sold its PC unit to focus on mobile business. Various analysts predict that as the mobile maker comes up with its own netbook devices, it has started a reverse trend. Up till now the market has seen that various PC makers come up with new handsets and not the other way for example Acer and HP. Dell also join the bandwagon and is planning to launch its mobile device soon.

Although, Nokia was planning an ARM-based Smartbook and it appeared that it is transformed into the Intel Atom-powered Booklet 3G netbook, but sources indicate that the company is still working on an ARM-based Smartbook and will introduce in 2010.

Specifications

Nokia is yet to provide a full list of specifications and details regarding the system's pricing and availability, which it promised to announce at the Nokia World event, next week. However, according to sources, the new device comes with a price tag of $799, higher than its peers.

Operating System: Various sources predict that the high price quoted on the web is due to the inclusion of upcoming Windows 7 operating system in the device. It is assumed that Booklet 3G would ship with either Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional instead of the stripped starter edition.

Display: Nokia Booklet 3G is going to be featured with the Atom Z530 processor with 10.1 inch display and weighing just 1.25kg. The Booklet 3G will be HD Ready. It has an HDMI output and is likely to offer at least 1280x720 pixels of resolution.

Connectivity: It will come with a sleek and stylish aluminum casing with a glossy finish that is reminiscent of Apple's build quality. For connectivity, Nokia Booklet 3G features Wi-Fi draft-n, 3G UMTS, Bluetooth and GPS and has an edge over other netbooks.

Keyboard: It seems that the device takes its inspiration from the MacBook Air and borrows its chiclet keyboard design.  Nokia Booklet 3G features well defined, full size SHIFT keys like full size laptop keyboards and its protruding black keys will certainly impress many of us.

Storage: Also, it is expected that Nokia might surpass the typical 1GB memory and 160GB hard disk limitations and would provide more options. It would also provide your typical netbook features, such as a webcam, 12 hour battery life and SD card reader.

Ovi applications: The company may increase its presence in the mobile PC market by expanding its Ovi services like Ovi Music Store, Ovi Maps and the Ovi suite, from handsets to PC products.

Conclusion

Nokia will be benefited from its strong distribution network as well as its experience in subsidization policies, for selling the new netbook.  The new netbook is not a revolutionary product from Nokia, but its unique combination of features will certainly outperform the inexpensive plastic netbooks that are currently flooding the market.
