World Wide Web turns 20! What next?
Twenty years ago, a British computer scientist, Tim Berners-Lee invented the Web and little did he know that this moment will mark remarkable revolution in human history. He designed a website with a few hyperlinks and some text to describe a project under the name ‘world wide web’, or W3 and fundamentally changed the world.

Initially, it didn’t gain much momentum, known only by a few scientists and computer geeks. But, gradually it brought the power of the internet in the fingertips of users, quite literally. The web really kicked off when the Mosaic graphical browser introduced, in 1993. It was the first web browser to display images on the same page as text.

In February 2009, an internet monitoring company, Netcraft, reported there were 215,675,903 websites with domain names and content on them.

Web has now become an indispensable aspect of our lives. It has obliterated the boundaries of nations and has linked billions of people together with information available on click of a button.

As World Wide Web has turned 20, let’s acknowledge the difference it made in our lives.

Ocean of information

Web provides an ocean of knowledge to even a normal user. Information about everything including latest happenings, history, geography, information about companies and etc is accessible through web.

Boon for Businesses

Financial sector has got a tremendous boost with increase in money exchange volumes, as money can now be transferred over a secured network.

Web has helped hugely in the foundation of truly global companies. Big as well as small enterprises have got a medium to market themselves (websites, online ads) to a much larger audience beyond geographical constraints.

Social Networking platform

This is the latest development of World Wide Web. Social networks have provided users a platform to connect like never before. Sharing photos, videos, thoughts, and day to day happenings with friends has become increasingly popular, quick and interactive.

Geographical barriers hold no significance if people want to connect with each other.

What next?

So, where does the Web go from here? Where will it be in next twenty years?

There’s a wide speculation that semantic web and personalisation are going to be two major trends for the web in the next few years. Berners-Lee coined the term ‘Semantic Web’, which comprises methods and technologies to allow machines to interpret the meaning of the information on the World Wide Web. It makes it simpler for search engines to comprehend the accurate meaning of any information published on the internet. However, the semantic web as a global vision remains a work in progress.

We can’t predict precisely everything that the future will hold for the Web, but whatever happens it won’t stand still and will continue to grow.

Long Live the World Wide Web.
