What lies behind RIM's slowdown?

Research In Motion and its BlackBerry brand is gradually losing its sheen.  The situation is getting worse for RIM, which is trying hard to compete against Apple and Google’s Android.

Seems, the time has gone when RIM was viewed as the most competitive brand in tech industry. It ruled the smartphone space with its advanced push email-equipped BlackBerry smartphones. But, now the situation is vice versa. The company has lost the zenith position, which it was enjoying for a long time. RIM's gloomy results and failure to deliver exciting new devices on time brought its shares down.  According to latest chunk of information, RIM’s shares have shrunk more than 50 percent this year after an increasing competition from Apple and Google’s Android powered devices.

RIM’s development and innovation over the past couple of years has been pretty slow in contrast to its rivals.

However, there are still plenty of folks who are big fans of BlackBerry devices for its sturdy QWERTY keyboard and BBM, yet the company is treading through a rocky patch. iPhones and Android devices have gobbled a big slice of the smartphone market.

Another sign of doom for RIM is its recently launched tablet, BlackBerry PlayBook. Initially, the tablet was launched to challenge the supremacy of Apple’s remarkable iPad. But sadly, it got lukewarm response from users and failed to make inroads to the enterprise segment. However, later RIM has introduced an upgraded version.

Now, Canadian giant is betting big on upcoming QNX based BlackBerry 10 operating system. BlackBerry 10 is a QNX-based operating system which is intended to help RIM to fight against its major rivals Google and Apple, which have swallowed up a big portion of BlackBerry mobile device’s market with their devices. Just like Apple's iOS and Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating systems, BlackBerry 10 is going to be a common platform for smartphones and tablets.

As per latest chunk of information, RIM is planning to introduce numerous BlackBerry 10 powered devices by next year. Some upcoming BlackBerry 10 powered devices are Blackberry Milan, Blackberry Nevada, Blackberry Forest, Blackberry London and Blackberry Lisbon.

Investors are hoping that RIM will make it through the turbulence. RIM too doesn’t want to be an easy catch for its rivals. It’s trying every bit to regain its lost sheen. The company is even looking towards some partnerships that might prove a game changer for it.

So, it would be too early to say that RIM has lost the battle. Although, RIM is losing market share, but definitely it is not out of the smartphone race.
