Is Motorola acquisition a wise decision for Google?

Google has acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion. Motorola Mobility exclusively sells numerous Android powered handsets and Xoom tablet with Google's Android operating system.

As a matter of concern, it is found, Motorola Mobility is one half of the old Motorola. It split at the beginning of last year. The other half, Motorola Solutions is an independent entity which sells barcode scanners, police radios, and other products aimed at government and corporate customers.

It is expected that the search giant, Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business after the acquisition.

Android operating system will continue to remain free for other Android device makers.

Motorola, which is struggling with plunging sales, these days, is expected to rise with the purchase by Google. Presently, Motorola Mobility is at eighth position in global mobile-device market, while Samsung is at top position, followed by Nokia, LG and Apple.

With this move, Google is aiming to strengthen its Android terrain. Google-Motorola acquisition will also make Google’s patent portfolio stronger as Motorola Mobility itself owns about 24,500 patents.

Hence, the deal is expected to prove beneficial for both the candidates ( Google & Motorola) as it can give a tough fight to other contenders such as HTC, LG, Sony Ericsson and Samsung, which also ship Android based devices.

Let’s see whether the acquisition will help companies to fortify their hold in tech industry or not.
