Microsoft Surface Vs Apple iPad: The heat is on!

Microsoft is geared up and is all set to step into the tablet market with a new tablet dubbed as surface. The Surface is the product; the company is banking upon for its sustainability in the tablet market.

Some analysts believe, Microsoft’s new tablet will outpace Apple’s iPad as it is a blend of innovative features and idiosyncratic looks. Microsoft has touted that there would be two options for Microsoft's Surface PC; one powered by Intel's 22nm Ivy Bridge chips running Windows 8, and another Surface powered by an ARM chipset and Windows RT.

With Surface, the software giant is foraying into the already-flooded tablet market and to take on Apple’s iPad as well as numerous tablets powered with Google's Android operating system. Let’s check out how the newly-unveiled Microsoft Surface line competes with Apple’s iPad.

Operating System:

Microsoft Surface comes in two versions as per their operating system, one is Windows RT and other is Windows 8 Pro. Apple iPad ( both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + cellular version) are power-packed with fifth version of Apple’s proprietary operating system iOS. For that matter, Microsoft’s expertise at intelligent and secure PC software suites can’t be challenged whereas; Apple iOS has been a hub of security flaws.

Weight and Thickness:

As per Microsoft’s report, Windows RT Surface is 9.3 mm thick, while Apple's new iPad is 9.4 millimeters. This way, Microsoft’s Surface has a upper hand in thickness. As far as weight is concerned, surface weighs about 676g and on the other hand Apple iPads weigh 652g for the Wi-Fi and 662g for Wi-Fi+ Cellular versions.

Screen size:

The screens for both the versions of Surface tablet (one with Windows RT and other with Windows 8 Pro) measure 10.6-inches. The screen is 16:9 widescreen featuring ClearType HD Display technology. The devices also claim crystal clear images with ultra-wide angle for viewing. On the other hand, Apple's iPad sports a 9.7-inch LED-backlit screen equipped with IPS technology.

Camera:

As far as camera is concerned, both the versions of Microsoft’s Surface tablet equips dual cameras (rear and front) called as LifeCam. However, Microsoft has not disclosed anything how much magapixels each camera packs.

The Apple's new iPad equips a 5 megapixel camera which can record 1080p HD videos at 30 frames per second.

Network Connectivity:

Surface’s Windows RT version consist microSD, USB 2.0, Micro HD video and 2x2 MIMO antennae, while Windows 8 Pro version comes with microSDXC, USB 3.0, Mini DisplayPort Video and 2x2MIMO antennae. Apple iPad, on the other hand, equips 30-pin dock connector port, 3.5-mm stereo headphone, built-in speaker and Bluetooth 4.0 on Wi-Fi version.

Touch Cover Vs Smart Cover:

Seems, Microsoft was inspired by Apple's Smart Cover. Surface tablets come equipped with a built-in Kickstand that facilitates users to place their tablets vertically on a table. Touch Cover comes in five different colours. iPads come packed with Smart Covers that protect iPad screen. Smart cover can be folded to make a stand which holds iPad horizontally, The iPad Smart Covers are available in 10 colors.

Pricing and availability:

Till date, the Redmond giant has not revealed the pricing and availability of Surface tablet line.

Apple iPad’s Wi-Fi model 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models are available for Rs 30,500, Rs 36,500 and Rs 42,500 respectively. iPad’s Wi-Fi + cellular 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models are available for Rs 38,900, Rs 44,900 and for Rs 50,900.
