Does social media bias reviews ?

Social networking is emerging as the new face of industries. The tools of Web 2.0 have given consumers the power which is making the industries to brainstorm their current strategies and to come with some novel ideas.

Social computing-a new fad on professional’s list is hitting hard on the products success and failure via these open forums. The openness brought by the forums and blogs have really hit hard on many industries. They are gradually arising as the determining factors for rating a product on market scale. Blogging and Forum discussions are open tools with no bars. The people flocking on these modules are free enough to pour their ideas with no restrictions put on them.

Traditionally, a product was rated as per its advertisements scale or the acceptance by public but now it can be rated on the critics or the analytical reviews. Internet and the evolution of technologies have set a new trend for marketing the product and defining a market map for them. Love it or hate it – but openness is the latest mantra.

World is widening up its acceptance spectrum and consumers are becoming more mature. They do not like to be a part of run of the mill but want to be judgmental for every new launch. Even while deciding for a purchase, consumers prefer to go through the guidelines. They want to make a smart purchase rather than allowing some one fooling them.

But is this openness good or bad for the products is the real food of thought. The openness is getting into today’s marketing arena and publicity massively. But is this approach driving the market right way? Is this openness fueling the competition and rivalry of products or is it making way for other new novel ideas coming into market.

Companies in many sectors are struggling hard at their roots to determine the best ways this openness can be reduced. They are looking for options to save their product being a victim of this openness. The new power with consumers is a tool that pours lot of information whether negative or positive.

The thoughts poured decide the fate of a product. In wider terms it can be said that such openness in marketing terms is proving fatal in long run.

The impact of such open forum discussions is dramatic on revenues and success of new products. For instance, the fate of Windows Vista, reviews were so fatal that people did not prefer it worth trial on their PCs. It was declared the biggest failure on Microsoft list.

What will be the long term impacts of this openness on products fate is unpredictable?
