To ramp up its wireless offerings, leading chip maker, Intel, is reportedly planning to acquire, Infineon. The German firm Infineon, spun off entity of Siemens AG, is a start up and was established in 1999.

It is being heard that Intel is interested in Infineon’s wireless communication division and the deal is valued for around $1.1 to $1.4 billion. The companies are expected to work on the final terms and conditions for the deal, as per the industry insiders. The startup is engaged in making devices based on RF and WiMAX. The wireless division of the company is the most profitable segment and accounted for almost 936 million Euros last year.

The market watchers are predicting it to be an attempt to boost its WiMAX offerings that are otherwise seem to lose grounds to LTE.

However, as per analysts, this could make Nokia furious that is otherwise in liaison with Intel over MeeGo.
