Microsoft in wake of increasing the hold on market has initiated a program to offer PC antivirus software free of cost.

The latest reports indicate that the software giant has changed its strategy for offering PC antivirus software. Instead of offering subscription-based consumer security suite, company has plans to offer individuals free software to protect their PCs. The free security suite is code-named as Morro.

The new suite will be available by the second half of 2009 and will protect against viruses, spyware, Rootkits, and Trojans.

With Morro, Microsoft will discontinue selling the Windows Live OneCare service. It lacks some non-security features, such as printer sharing and automated PC tune-up. Else it is loaded with fewer resources just targeting the low-bandwidth systems and less powerful PCs.

The analysts after analyzing the every possibility have words that this is a sign of defeat for Microsoft.
The step by Microsoft can put numbers of customers on stake for McAfee. In last two years, OneCare has only grasped 2% of market share.

OneCare costs $49.95 per year for use on up to three PCs that run Windows XP with Service Pack 2. That’s less than Symantec and McAfee charge for three-user editions of their existing security suites.
