Yahoo! India Research & Development has announced the fifth edition of Open Hack in India, which will take place on August 11- 12 in Bangalore. Over the years, Yahoo!’s Open Hack Day has turned into a calendar event for the developer community, with new registration records set each year. Over 2,000 developers have registered this year, of which around 700 developers from 20 states across India have been accepted for the event.

Yahoo!’s Open Hack 2012 begins on August 11 with a series of technical workshops, followed by a hackathon – a non-stop 24-hour coding marathon. The key Internet themes under which developers are encouraged to hack include multi–device experiences, search, communications, mobile and video.  To build their application, hackers are providedwith popular technologies and tools from the Open Web, including Yahoo!’s YUI, YQL and Mojito, as well as geo-location and Flickr APIs (Application Programmable Interface)—which serve as the core building blocks for exciting new applications.

Open Hack Day celebrates the culture of innovation, bringing developers from all over the country to turn ideas into a working prototype, or a hack as it’s called. It provides a chance to work together, and make something cool that can potentially solve a “real-world” problem impacting millions of Internet users. Over the years, Yahoo! has witnessed several hack prototypes evolve into products, apps, partnerships and even funded startups stated by Shouvick Mukherjee, VP and Head, Yahoo! India R&D.

All the entries will be reviewed at the end of the 24-hour hacking period. Subsequently, the shortlisted entries will be demoed for the panel of judges to determine the winning hacks. The grand winner will be invited to attend the Yahoo! Hack event in Cannes in 2013. The winners in sub categories will get a chance to win other cool prizes like iPhones and iPod nano watches.
