Lenovo Group, North Carolina based PC manufacturer has announced that it will launch a "Smartbook" at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.
The name smartbook was first used by Qualcomm and Freescale for the device, which is in between netbooks and Smartphones. While netbooks run on Intel’s Atom processors and feature Windows operating systems, Smartbooks are based on a Qualcomm mobile processor called Snapdragon and have Linux software.
The company has not announced much details of the device; however Lenovo added that it is developing a smartbook, which is based on Snapdragon platform.
According to sources, Qualcomm’s financial analyst and Paul Jacobs, chief executive of Qualcomm have demonstrated a prototype design of the Smartbook at its investor’s day analyst conference.
It is reported that the new device will be sold through AT&T, probably with some subsidized data plan, however AT&T spokesman has not offered any details.
However, Freescale has added that the Smartbook will not be the industry's first such device. Freescale and Sharp had worked to develop a smartbook that has begun shipping in Japan.
