There was a time netbooks ruled the land. But, with the rise of tablets and ultrabooks, the mini notebooks are quietly dying. If reports are to be believed, after discontinuing Streak 5 & streak 7 tablets, Dell has now decided to dump its Inspiron Mini line of netbooks.
According to the Dell website, the company is no longer offering netbooks and search of the site for 10-inch systems returns no results for Dell.
Dell which is struggling with plummeting sales, has reportedly made a commitment to maximize its "profit share", not market share, meaning that it has moved to higher-margin products across all of its categories. It is reportedly said that Dell has lost its market share during the third quarter. In Q3, revenues of the company remained flat at $15.36 billion, compared to $15.39 billion in the same period a year ago.
A spokesman from Dell has confirmed that the company is shifting focus away from the inexpensive notebooks. Instead, Dell will now focus on “thin and powerful” ultrabooks.
It is reportedly said that even the processor maker are betting big on ultrathin notebooks, these days. For instance, both Intel and AMD are focusing heavily on CPU platforms that allow for ultrathin notebooks.
