Google has been found guilty on infringing the Linux patents. Insiders revealed that jury in the Eastern District of Texas has asked Google to pay $5 million in damages to Bedrock Computer Technologies for using versions of Linux that breach Bedrock's patents.
According to a source, Bedrock, a company that is no longer in operation sued Google over a patent that covers a search and retrieval system allowing records to expire and not be included in the search results. The suit which was filed on June 2009 includes a long list of Linux kernels, from kernel 2.4.22.x to 2.6.31.x and "beyond."
Google is definitely riding high on the success of Android. It is slowly emerging as a giant player in the mobile and tablet markets. This has made the search giant a soft target for those looking to cash in. Moreover, company has leveraged so much software with disputed patents combined with open sourced code.
Some sources also reported that Google will defend the attack and is considering an appeal. The patent is a peril to all Linux vendors and users and if Google lose this case then Bedrock will aim many other companies for royalties.
