Amid some criticism regarding the quality and usability of low-cost ''Aakash'' tablet PC, there was a buzz that Datawind, the makers of first version of Aakash may lose their Letter of Credit. Now, according to a latest update, there are several other potential bidders for the manufacturing of next generation Aakash tablet.
If reports are to be believed, HCL had also expressed its desire to bid for the next version of Aakash tablet.
According to Gautam Advani, Executive VP and Head, HCL Infosystems, the tender is yet to come out with the specifications. But if it comes to prices which are not feasible, the company will exit graciously.
It is reportedly said that the bidding for the next generation Aakash will begin later this year. However, there is no word on the exact date or the number of tablets to be manufactured.
It is worth noticing, HCL has launched launched two Android 4.0 or Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) based tablets: HCL ME U1 and HCL MyEdu Tabe new U1 and MyEdu in Indian market, just a couple of days back.
Till date, Datawind has delivered around 30,000 tablets and now the rest 70,000 will have the upgraded version of Aakash-II.
