Six months after deciding to open source its mobile operating system WebOS, HP has finally decided to spin off its WebOS Global Business Unit into a separate company called Gram.
It is reportedly that the new organization, which will act as a wholly owned subsidiary of HP, will include the WebOS software and cloud services team, along with all resources related to Enyo. Enyo is the WebOS application framework for developers.
According to a leaked internal memo from Martin Risau, Vice President at HP-Gram, at the core of all things big and small, the company will significantly focus on software and solutions.
Market experts added, the formation of Gram is marking the most recent changes made by HP to its WebOS business unit over the past two years. Early back in August 2011, HP announced it was discontinuing its WebOS-based TouchPad tablet, just six weeks after its launch. The TouchPad failed to compete against the iPad and other Android-based rivals available in the market at that time. HP also halted all development for WebOS-based devices at that time.
However, it is difficult to say anything confirmed on this as the public timeline for Gram's rollout has not been disclosed yet.
