The tech giant Apple is reportedly working on laptops and smartphones powered by hydrogen fuel cells that would last for weeks without the need to be recharged.  

Trusted aides confirmed that Apple has submitted two documents to the U.S Patent and Trademark Office with its patent ideas indicating hydrogen-powered smartphones in the works. The two patents that Apple has submitted are - Fuel Cell System to Power a Portable Computing Device and Fuel Cell System Coupled with a Portable Computing Device. 

Specifically, Apple's latest patent plans will eliminate "the need for bulky and heavy batteries", which, needless to say will lead to lighter devices.  

As a matter of concern, it is said that a hydrogen fuel cell converts hydrogen and oxygen into water and electrical energy. Hydrogen fuels cells last longer in comparison to ordinary batteries and produce only water as a by-product, instead of toxic chemicals. The new initiative by Apple is an eco-friendly option. 

According to a spokesperson from Apple, hydrogen fuel cells have a number of benefits. Such fuel cells can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities, which enable portable electronic devices working for days or even weeks without recharging. 

Besides Apple, other electronic manufacturers have also shown growing interest in hydrogen-powered cells. 

So, get ready to welcome lighter iPhones and iPads packed with hydrogen cells soon in the market.
