According to a latest update, the number of mobile phone subscribers in India reaches a benchmark of 929.37 million in May.
Country's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel has once again cemented its leadership position by adding maximum number of subscribers in May. If reports are to be believed, Bharti Airtel alone has signed up over 2.01 million customers in the month of May. Presently, Airtel has 185 million subscribers, followed by Idea Cellular by adding 1.8 million subscribers only in May to take its subscribers count to 116 million.
On the other hand, state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) added just 1,735 new users, while MTNL lost 0.17 million customers during the month, taking their subscriber base to 94.68 and 5.32 million respectively.
As per data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), with an addition of 8.35 million new subscribers, the wireless user base grew 0.91 percent in May from 921.02 million in the month of April.
Over all, with this data, the total number of telephone subscribers, including land line holders, touched 960.90 million, accounting a boost of 0.84 percent.
It is worth noticing, out of the total 929.37 million wireless subscribers; only 689.33 million subscribers were active on the date of peak visitor location register (VLR).
