Intel targeting enterprises with new Xeon E5-2600 chips

Intel has enhanced its product portfolio with new E5-2600 series of Xeon processors for the enterprise segment.

It is reportedly said that the new Xeon E5-2600 processors are the first to integrate the PCI-Express 3.0 bus on the processor. It is worth noticing that the PCI-Express technology is significantly used to transfer data between components inside computers and other mobile devices.

Some other intuitive highlights of the new E5-2600 CPUs are Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX), Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, Intel Node Manager and Intel Data Center Manager (Intel DCM). As far as cache support is concerned, the new chips will support up to 20MB of L3 cache and will carry forward the same quad-channel memory.

Sources informed that the processors include up to 8 cores and are up to whopping 80 percent faster which consume half the power of their predecessors.

It is found that the chip maker has already supplied E5 chips for a supercomputer called Stampede, which will be fully deployed in 2013. Besides Stampede, dozens of companies including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, IBM, Lenovo, and Supermicro have committed to shipping E5-based systems later this year.

Market watchers added, Intel's last major server upgrade was in March 2010, when the company announced Xeon 5600 servers.
