Microsoft urges Intel to become energy efficient
Added On:1/28/2011 2:37:00 PM

In a bid to make its data centre environment friendly, Microsoft has reportedly suggested a 16 core design for Intel Atom. The software titan will reportedly use the new enhanced version in servers to improve energy efficiency.

The usage of low power Atom Chip and AMD Bobcat chips could bring in lots of improvement in regards to energy consumption levels. Though Atom is a low power chip meant for netbooks, it is energy efficient for some server workloads too.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's data centres power mostly Web-centric applications like Bing, Hotmail and Windows Live Messenger along with business applications. The move to low power chips is not new since Dell is already leading the bandwagon by selling servers based on Via’s Nano. The Redmond giant seems to be serious with its move towards Low power chips and in fact has made some requests specifically to Intel and AMD.

Moving further, it is being suggested that gradually ARM can also be a choice for Microsoft, which is otherwise currently a choice for mobile devices.
