According to latest reports, the smartphone market has faced a boost in sales, since the figures for the mobile phones sales have crossed 50 million mark in the January-March quarter of this year, up 9.1 percent from last year’s report at the same time.
To the reader’s surprise, smartphones made up over 5 percent of the total phones sold and almost a quarter of the total handset revenues in India. Amongst the whole smartphone range, dual-SIM handset indicated a noticeable growth. However, multi-sim handsets, which have been very popular among Indian consumers, accounted for only two-thirds of the total sales.
Further, smartphone shipment is expected to reach a benchmark of 301 million by 2015, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.03 percent during the period of 2012-2015.
Amongst smartphone makers, the Finnish giant Nokia is the leader in both feature phone and smartphone categories. Stats revealed, Nokia retained its leadership position with 23 percent share, followed by Korean handset maker Samsung which is at second position with over 14 percent share. As far as homegrown brands are concerned, Micromax grabbed the third position with almost 5.8 percent share, in terms of sales (unit shipments) during the January-March period.
Other handset players like Motorola and Sony have chosen to stay in the high value smartphones segment, where they accounted for 5.3 and 23.4 percent market share respectively.
