Samsung has witnessed blockbuster sales of its mobile devices since the time it adopted Android platform. The Korean giant is close on heels with Apple with its smartphones like Galaxy smartphone range earning tremendous response.
Apart from Android, Samung is also focusing on its homegrown mobile platform called Bada OS. The operating system has reportedly surpassed Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 in the first quarter of this year.
That’s why the news of Samsung open-sourcing the Bada platform has created doubts among the market watchers?
Sources reported that Samsung would open-source its mobile OS next year to reduce its reliance on Android.
Samsung believes that Android has become popular by opening up to the market.
Market watchers believe, it is wrong to think that developers crave to support an OS just because it is open source. One has to provide massive amounts of support, and motivation, to tap into the creativity of the masses.
In addition, Bada has no licensees, and most probably will not find anytime soon. The platform is completely sheltered into Samsung's own cloud services; therefore no other vendor is likely to launch a Bada handset without significant modifications to the OS.
The closed nature of Bada is its greatest strength, so there seems no advantage to having an open-source platform.
