After a big round of discussion, internet giants Google Inc and Facebook have finally removed disparaging content from some Indian domain websites.
Earlier this month, Indian government asked ISPs to delete information published on web that some citizens or officials considered harassing. But, talks between the government and the internet companies such as Google, Facebook, and Yahoo had failed as these biggies declined to pre-screen or remove disparaging content.
Sources informed that the court has taken a legal step against showing some 'inflammatory' images of religious figures on these websites. Google and Facebook are among 21 companies forced to develop a mechanism to block objectionable material after few private petitioners took them to court.
It is found, numerous countrymen are in the favor of latest law, while some web critics are criticizing the move saying, the latest change will mark a new trend in the Internet companies bowing to the demands of authoritarian regimes. Google, on the other hand, claimed that the move would actually allow more freedom of speech
Interestingly, fewer than one in 10 of India's 1.2 billion population has access to the Internet that still makes it the third-biggest Internet market after China and the United States.
The number of Internet users in India are continuously increasing and it is expected to reach almost triple to 300 million over the next three years.
