According to latest news, Nvidia Corp, the chip maker has announced that it will release new software to reduce battery consumption in notebook PCs that use high-powered graphics cards.
The new software, called Optimus, will switch off power hungry graphics cards when not in use. For example, if a notebook user is surfing the Web or checking e-mail, Optimus will turn the graphic card off, allowing the chipset, which is attached with the computer's main processor, to deal with these simpler tasks. In contrast, when a user wants to watch a movie, the software flips the chip on to deal with the larger data load.
Hence, the software will save battery life upto dive fold and remove problem in the wider adoption of graphics cards in notebook PCs. Earlier, users have to manually control the on/off of the graphic chips, which interrupt the smooth working of the device.
Today, graphics cards are becoming increasingly important for computer enthusiasts and gamers as people also want to watch movies and play games on PCs.
